MEET ZAGREB

Immerse in this vibrant city
Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, city situated on the slopes of Medvednica Hill (Zagrebačka Gora) to the north and the floodplain of the Sava River to the south. It is the historic and political threshold between East and West, and illustrates both the continental and Mediterranean spirit of the nation it spearheads.

THE HISTORY

Zagreb has a tumultuous history that dates back to the Roman times, when two medieval Hungarian settlements, Gradec and Kaptol, were established in the area. The two settlements had undergone different rulings throughout history, but ended up joining together in the 19th century. As the two towns combined, the city rapidly expanded and town squares and other nowadays recognizable public buildings began to form.

In 1945, Zagreb was declared the capital of Croatia, and today Zagreb is the highest populated and the biggest city in Croatia, as well as countrys cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative centre.

THE NAME

The legend behind the name Zagreb says that a weary passing knight struck his sword into the dry ground to reveal water rushing from the crack that was made. The knight called to a local girl called Manda and said Mando, dušo, zagrabi vode” (Manda, dear, grab me some water). The word zagrabi (grab) is where the name Zagreb is believed to have come from.

THE VIBE

Today, Zagreb is a city that is simultaneously vibrant and still, urban and green, a city that has much to offer, both at night and during the day, a city whose streets beckon you to explore them in detail, a city that warmly invites all those who wish to get to know it, and a city that will surely fulfill your expectations.

THE PEOPLE

Over the centuries, the city was inhabited by people coming from all over Europe; and, in recent years, by people coming from different parts of Croatia, ensuring a rich cultural life. In this city, you can easily meet remarkable people, make new friends and enjoy their hospitality.

THE CITY TOUR

If you visit Zagreb for the first time, start exploring the citys hidden corners, culinary offer, history, people, and their way of living. We recommend walking tours that will take you to Ban Jelačić Square, Tkalčićeva Street, Zagreb Upper Town, Stone Gate, Saint Marks Church, Lotrščak Tower, Zrinjevac Park, Croatian State Archives, Zagreb City Museum, Dolac market… Immerse in this beautiful and vibrant city!

THE FOOD

Zagreb gastronomy scene is a blend of different influences brought about by the citys tumultuous history and its residents. Zagreb is also a place where the many Croatian regional cuisines converge, oftentimes picking and choosing the best of each. To explore that rich symphony of flavours and aromas that define our city, we encourage you to check some of the best restaurants in the city’s centre.
